One exterior picture concerns many homeowners — cracks in hair in paint on plywood surfaces. Most builders today used a lot of plywood in the construction of houses. Plywood is a durable and durable material, but there are some problems that can arise in the process of overtime plywood. It will be more cracking at the surface level. Fiber cracks that develop in plywood are called tests in the exterior paint industry.
Usually, the test takes place on the outer veneer of the plywood surface, which is exposed to sunlight and weather. Plywood outer veneers will crack along the grain line after exposure to re-expansion and contraction due to environmental influences. When a grain separation occurs, it triggers a check on the painted surface.
Often one question is asked about the exterior color - how to properly handle the area where the test takes place. It usually depends on how poorly verified it is. You may need to replace the plywood if cracking is bad enough and if there is a lot of sunshine, temperature and humidity in this area. However, before deciding to replace the plywood, I would try the following process.
1. The first step is to sand in all areas using a powerful grinding machine to remove oxidation and smooth the surface.
2. Folds a thin layer of compaction into the cracks and seams of the plywood surface.
3. After the grinding is complete and all the cracks are filled with caulks, fill the bare wood with two layers of Zinsser Peel Stop. Peel Stop is a very elastic primer that can withstand the expansion and contraction of cracks in plywood without separation. This elastic base layer is very important to withstand movement in veneer made of plywood.
4. After the sole of Zinsser Peel Stop has come close, apply two coats of good quality exterior paint for the home. My preference for the first coat is Sherwin Williams exterior paint. Duration is 70 percent more elasticity than your average 25-year paint, and will stretch without separation along the grain line of plywood veneer.
5. In cases where plywood is very old, you may need to completely replace the wood.
6.If you decide to replace the plywood, then follow the processes described above so that there are no problems in the future.
It should be remembered that the elasticity of paint is important for maintaining movement along the grain of plywood surfaces. Oil paint and primers do not have sufficient elasticity built into their formulas for handling the checks that occur when plywood is exposed to sunlight, moisture and constantly changing temperatures.
You must remember this content. A thicker paint film allows the paint to stretch more, covering cracks for a much longer period of time. I recommend 4 layers above (2 layers of Peel Stop and 2 Coats of Duration), because a thicker film of paint will stretch further without cracks.
