history
The area in which the city is now located was inhabited in prehistoric times. Archaeologists have uncovered remnants of the Celtic, Greek, Phoenician, Roman, Vysgothic and Moorish occupation. This city was founded by King Alfonso V. The city was conveniently located to enjoy the fruits of the boom in international trade. Many local products, such as olives, figs, fish, wine and oil, were regularly exported to the port of Portimão.
The city suffered after the earthquake of 1755, but was reconstructed in the next few years. In the 20th century, Portimão became populated with chalets and houses built for tourists.
