 Froggin in Mississippi -2

“It tastes like chicken,” says Lance Zander, a local street man from Choctaw Bayou. Lance is that very southern species - he is a frog.

More than 30 species of frogs and toads live in the state of Magnolia according to the ASA. They range from a tiny long oak toad, which is the smallest toad in North America, a huge American bull frog, which is the largest at a height of over 8 inches. In between, there are legions of Khorus frogs, narrow toadstools, pork frogs, barking frogs, leopard frogs, and Fowler’s gray and white lips. The most popular among the hunters for frogs are the olive pinkish frog, which can reach 6 inches in length, the southern leopard, which is a spotted green and brown, and, of course, an American frog. At least there are a lot of frogs in the state.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) classifies a frog as a small game hunt along with a rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, possum and bobcat. The season of frogs in Mississippi lasts from April Fool's Day to the end of September, and as such, the longest season of any game in the state is six full months. Currently, the bag limit is set at 25 frogs and toads per night — these are fifty legs and good food for the whole family. Be sure to get a license, a hunters card (if necessary) and be aware of your limitations and time by visiting the MDWFP website.

The best areas for frogs

The Lakes of Oksvad, ponds with gums and almost everywhere where you see a lot of flying insects and lillipads will be the perfect place for a frog to practice its art.

The wetlands of the Gulf Coast with numerous wetlands, turbulent rivers and streams are a bit warmer in winter than the areas north of I-20, and, as such, the frog population continues to multiply in winter in many coastal estuaries. This means that in spring an explosion occurred among lily pads and marsh grass of overpopulation of frogs. For example, these fertile breeding grounds of the Pascagoula River system are home to 109 species of fish, unique species of turtles found only there, and all 30 known frogs in a state of 9,600 square kilometers of wetland. This is quite a literal paradise for frogs.

That lance works its magic.

Frog Hunting Technique

Working with a flat-bottomed aluminum boat that is older than him, Lance swings the bayo on most weekends with the help of a passing beam and his stepbrother Monroe, looking for big frogs. The team shares hunting and wealth, one of which controls the boat, and the other sits on the side, the searchlight in his hands.

"You look at the eyes," explains Lance. "As soon as your run penetrates the water, eyes appear like stars." Then head to the nearest set. "

As soon as he is close enough to the toad, it depends on how he takes them. Some people go to school; and snatch a hypnotized flying ogre from his perch on a log or lily, and then throw it into a container. Others use the a.22 rifle to pull out the critter, and then scoop it up with a submersible mesh. Another concert for the frogs, sending an ancient hunter-gatherer with the experience of a spear, which is still locked in their DNA from time to time.

“I'm a wizard,” Monroe boasts. A leather leather frog explains that the term is used by locals to describe the frog's stunning method with a good boat ridge flavor, and then retrieve it when it floats around, wondering what kind of truck hit it.

To hold your frogs, it is preferable to have some kind of good solid container with a lid, such as an ice chest, a dustbin, or a rubber container. Lance is a fan of straw buckets with a lid tied to a bucket with a string, so it does not fall out of the boat in the dark and does not float along the shore. "Yes, it happened once." Lance says

Naturally, there is a more high-tech set, which stands for more attractive means of dealing with toads. Some frogs use perch. There are even local manufacturers of the cottage industry who sell specially made baskets for frying. Made of PVC coated wire and rubber tip. Baskets are designed to be placed inside the cooler for 48 quarters and securely hold up to 150 frogs at a time.

This is a lot of frog legs.
