 Chesapeake Bay Secrets Revealed -2

Over the past few years, the Upper Gulf of Chesapeake Bay has gained a lot of fame due to the improved catch rates and the overall weight gain reported in tournaments. While real river rats have long been aware of this bad bar, recent success has attracted clubs from all over the state of Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and even as far as New York. Most of this pressure converged on the Elk River and in the area of Taiding Park in Le Havre de Grace, Maryland. Because these areas provide more than enough running and parking opportunities for tournaments. Many of the smaller club tournaments also start in the northeast and the Elk areas. Thanks to this influx of pressure on fish, many traditional hot spots are becoming increasingly crowded on weekends and force anglers to take longer and longer runs in search of unused bass water. Many of these anglers have now discovered that a 20–30 minute drive through sometimes rough and unsafe water, to the Sassafras River, is worth it.

Ramp and run places

The following places and patterns not only prepared tournament points, but also gave more than 100 bass in the range of 5-6 pounds for the last 5 years from this river. These are the real bass of the "Trophy" for the system of the northeast rivers.

The Elk River through Elk Neck State Park is probably the most popular because of this more than adequate parking and close to Sassafras. It is only 10-15 minutes from Sassafras.

Park and Marina Taiding, located in Le Havre de Grace, Maryland, is the furthest and most difficult to access to the Sassafras River. We leave this area only when we have a good amount of bass in the Susquehanna apartments or in the neighboring bays or docks in the northeast. Driving from here can be dangerous in the early morning mist, and a heavy boat wakes up in spring and summer. At an altitude of 55 miles per hour, it takes about 25 minutes to reach the first starting point in Sassafras. The best launch area in Sassafras is located in Duffy Creek, located right behind the Granary restaurant, on Sassafras Street, in the city of Galena. This is a private marina with an average parking and a good ramp. This is a usage fee and a daily fee of $ 5.00 is charged.

The second launch area is a public boat on Sassafras Street, right in front of the restaurant. This is a small boat ramp, but it is sufficient to launch most of the bass boat at an appropriate tide. In situations with low tide this can be a difficult ramp, so great care should be taken at this time because it is extremely shallow and has destroyed many boat supports and the hull. The next place you can run is the “allow only” frame, located in Turner Creek. This area has a large parking lot and offers a medium area for rivers.

When and where to go - Turner

Although Sassafras offers excellent fishing all year round, except for winter, early spring is the best time to start. Spring on Sassafras is similar to any other body of water, due to the fact that the life of the bass revolves completely around the process of spawning and the place of spawning grounds. Sassafras usually holds bass in almost every area of the river, but at this time of year it suddenly shrinks to a few, and ultimately, with two main creeks.

In early pre-regeneration, cattle can be found in emerging grass and wood cover in places like Hall Creek, Freeman, McGill, Turner, Dupont and Lloyd. As caviar gets even closer, they almost completely move on to Turner and Lloyd.

Turner's Scream offers a huge variety of bass covers. This creek has a narrow entrance, where the main river channel runs right along the forest coast with a steep descent. A precarious bass lay along this drop at depths from 2 to 18 feet, all of which are loaded with stacks and emerging vegetation. Right next to the entrance is a small cove filled with lily cushions and several varieties of emerging grass, on a slow, narrowing bank that has ever leveled into the main river channel. This area at the entrance to the Turner Creek is one of two main staging areas for a large section in Sassafras. The western coastline of this creek is completely covered by what are new lily-based root systems that are mixed with several types of vegetation, including Milfoil and Hydrilla. Many basses choose these root systems for appearance. The eastern coastline offers hard sand and stone bottom, as well as vegetation, which is mixed with several large docks for boats. The basses use the docks, and the constant and weak sufferings hold and, eventually, lay their beds to avoid the currents and predators that predominate in the river.

Selection and selection strategy

When targeting the front bass belt at the creek entrance, the strand bait is our weapon of choice. Terminators spinnerbaits in sizes 3/8 and ounces, with tandem blades are the leading manufacturers in these areas. Spotsticker Custom spinnerbaits, along with the Tru-Tungsten series and B & D lures, the Spilbury Evilution V bait also weighs its share of bass in this area in the spring. The color is not so important at this time of year in dirty water, but we had the best success with baits that imitate shad, in white / chartreuse, and in Golden Shiner models. If the water is really "dirty", then we will use a darker skirt many times.

When we look for this one big bite to renew our limit, the baits we use are Senko and Bearpaws Handpoured Baits. They are similar to Senko in size and appearance, but have a different production process, which is baked in flavors and a little tougher, so they will last longer when the bass is aggressive. These lures also provide all sizes of bass better when the cold front moves, and causes the action to slow down. When a strong cold front flies through in a few days, it will cause the bass to fall to deeper water in the 10-foot range and hold the tops of the trees. When this happens, we aim them at the lure of the mid-range crank, using a stop and return with great success. After the bass moves to the back of the creek to spawn, “Senko”, “Bearpaws”, “IKA”, “Sizmic”, lizards and terminators Terminator, docks, grass and gaskets, create a good limit in a short time.

On weekends in the spring, this area can be crowded with many other anglers, and small and medium hook baits, such as the Mann Mid-Minus and the Lucky Craft series, can be a great tool in addition to baits and plastics. Feel free to throw a buzzing bait around the same lid as soon as the water temperature is heated to 55 degrees or more. At this time of year, this may lead to the appearance of true hawg. We like to use the clacker lure like custom made for us by “Charon” Custom Lures. We also have great success with the Terminator Ball-Buster. The old standby — the black-and-blue Terminator unit, with pork or plastic for a trailer placed inside and around piles, dock stairs and floating docks, will always produce good bass. Most anglers use jig while fishing at the docks, but many times resort to other lures. This may be a mistake, as many times in the spring, we heard a few bass in the 5 and 6 pound class, turning the wood in Turner Creek with this jig. Turner & # 39; s Creek is a hot spot at all times of the year, but it is especially productive in the spring. An experienced angler can expect 10-15 bass on a good day from this creek alone. Although at times, other creeks can produce more bass, this creek gives it better bass on an ongoing basis. Our biggest bass from this creek was 6.4 pounds, but we heard that a 7-pound bass was caught.

Lloyd creek

This is the most productive spring spot on the Sassafras River, and, in our opinion, on the entire bay of the Upper Chesapeake Bay. While salmon bass appears in several creeks along the river, a major chooses Lloyd Creek. While the input to Lloyd Creek is a very strong current, the rest of the movement has very little movement.

The coastline, for the most part, is very shallow in Lloyd, but offers some depths up to 6 feet from the coast. The whole stream is loaded with a lid. This includes manors, loggias and various herbs and an old barge. Barge, grass and seaside resorts in Lloyd are the most productive areas. Bass loves to hold onto these pieces, and in combination with a hard sandy bottom and rocks, it creates an ideal habitat for a tidal breeding ground.

Along with the perfect cover, bottom composition and the sun, Lloyd offers something else that makes it the perfect breeding ground for tidal bass. It has a clear and definite canal leading to the stream and to all points along the coastline. This provides a virtual “freeway” for bass. This makes the job of targeting these bass when changing water conditions and seasons quite simple. I believe that this is the reason that not only the huge amount of bass in Sassafras comes here, but I believe that they come from other nearby rivers, and perhaps even from outside.

In early spring, the bass will begin to form at the entrance to Lloyd's Creek in amazing quantities. The water here is fast and runs from 16 feet in the main channel, as shown below 1 foot ashore. This steep flight runs from about 300 yards from the entrance to fast moving water, about 50 yards into the stream, and stops at a large dock. The entire coast on this side is loaded with old trees, a brush and rocks. On the opposite side, a huge peninsula appears, forming an ideal sandy area 20 yards from a steep coast. This is a 20-story space. Entrance to Lloyd Creek. That is why the current ones are growing in this area at an incredible pace. Even a 24-volt trolling motor can barely hold a position at the highest altitude in this area. Bass gathers around this sandy point and surrounding areas.

The best lures for this area are rat L-traps in blue / chrome, 3/8 and ounce sizes, Terminator and Spotsticker lures in ounces, with tandems and / or willow leaf blades and small baits. About 10 yards from the top of the point, the current turbulence forms a large whirlwind. Many times 15-20 bass in the range of 1 to 3 pounds can be prepared with successful strikes on this whirlwind. Another tactic is to direct your bait directly to a point of sand, and then pull it into fast moving water, and the bass just slams the bait, when it enters, many times on all other actors for an hour or more. On the opposite bank, the bass smells like a forest, as this is the only thing that blocks the current. At low tide, these basses will slap at the same reaction bait as at the point, however, when the current is fast; the best thing to do is to turn the heavy fixtures and plastics into wood. The reason why we like Terminator devices for this and other types of covers is an eye recessed into the head, not allowing the jig to catch at least 75% less than other devices. With an unpleasant cover in this area is a must.

When this area begins to experience pressure from other anglers, we switched to an IKA tube with a tungsten weight of 3/8 ounces with great success. We turn these baits on the top side of the lid and let the tide wash the bait past the object. Most beats come as soon as the lure misses by where they hold the bass. Observing your line is mandatory, as the current makes most strokes difficult, if not impossible, to detect. The only positive side of this is that, because if the amount of energy these basses have to spend on fighting the current, they almost never miss the bait once they make it. Heavy line with high abrasion performance is required.

The next place is the dock, where the river channel stops and makes a sharp right turn to the back of the stream. The best areas of the docking station are the first 3 sawing from the rocks. Here, in the range of 2 to 5 pounds, a multitude of basses, pipes, and suspended plastics occupy a multitude of basses.

These three spots form the final intermediate region. More bass will move to this place almost as quickly as you can catch them from time to time. These basses are also extremely aggressive. The best advice for this area is to get there at the beginning of the year. You will not only escape the crowd, but you will also come across some of the larger women born before the appearance.

When the spring is in full swing, the bass will follow the streams to the barges, piles and stowages in the back of the stream. This is when a large number of men from £ 1 make their way to places of production. There is a 2-3 week period when these basses will attack almost everything that falls into the water. This is when it is sensible to get into the entrance for a quick 10-pound limit, and then go back to the sunken barge for larger women. Weightless Senko, Bearpaws and IKA tubes with anchored weight produce heavyweight females when they roll to the grassy edges of the barge. Quickly retrieving bait with a spinner is necessary from time to time to pick up males from the edges of the barge before heading for large females with plastics. Currently, gaskets will also be created, as well as sandbox sections. Slow down and cover the whole area to get a reward with a huge bag of bass.

When the spawn begins its way, simply follow the same channel of the stream back to the same areas where the fish has stalled in pre-regenergia. As in the beginning of the year, large fish will also be the first. This is plastics time! Now the fish is pretty sluggish, so it takes a little more refinement. They need light food, and soft plastics like these pick up the bill!

As the smaller bass reaches the mouth of the Lloyd, you will see that the bass hits the lure with spinners and crank lures. Although the following paths to success can be simple, there are a few tricks that can help you upgrade your limit. In the middle of the calf, fishermen will crowd around the spots we mentioned. Some of these anglers will target shallow fish spawning grounds, while others will prick before or after bass appears in the current flushed mouth of the Lloyd River. At this time, we use our depth finder to find and follow the stream channel from the intermediate area back to the spawning area, looking for bends, humps and even weed lines that work on the edge of the channel. Sometimes we mark the fish on the locator, but the structure is all that we are really looking for.

We discard the trolling motor and begin to carry the Carolina urn with a 3-inch Senko or other plastic lure Yamamoto or Sweet Beaver.

The second trick that we use at the very end of the calf here. We turn on the electronics and find the first large design large enough to hold the bass and baitfish that left the stream. Keyword close. We are within mile to mile from the main spawning area, looking for these spots. The key places will be grass, and next to it you can go on a deep-sea evacuation.

Rivers Northeast, Bohemia and Elk

The Northeastern River offers one of the best folding bites on the bay, and also 20 minutes from Sassafras. One of the best spring spots in this area is Furnace Bay. Many large basses come from buyzbaits from Peros Bay at the beginning of the year. Bohemia offers medium fishing for bass, but this is a quick shot to both burdock and sassafras, and is a good middle starting point. For an angler who has a small boat that cannot take a longer, more difficult trip to Sassafras from the Havre de Grace route, this is a good place to start.

The docks, located on the northeast and elk, are the main targets for bass, since they lack most of the structure that Sassafras offers. The bass hit the plastics and the black and blue ends of the Terminator here, both on outgoing and incoming tides. Accommodation here is crucial. The fixtures must not only be placed in the smallest holes and holes, but must be presented several times before impact. Practice your turning and pitching techniques before attempting these waters.

The Susquehanna River on the Havre-De-Grace railway bridge is a hot place for large and shallow bass, as well as for Garrett Island, in the rocks it also produces from time to time. This area is carried by the amount of water that is released from outside the river, as it can be very muddy when they release a lot of water after heavy spring rains, and it can almost stop the bites of a small duck from time to time.
