The state of Missouri joined the union in 1821 as the 24th state. Springfield is the state’s third largest city and is a county of Green County. Here are some interesting facts that you may not have heard about the Springfield area before.

  • The highest temperature ever recorded was 113 degrees.

  • The coldest temperature was -17 degrees in February.

  • Bob Barker attended high school in Springfield.

  • The area known as North Springfield was once called Luna City.

  • Springfield is sometimes referred to as Route 66 Birthplace, because of its early design with the US Route 66 design. The Park Central Square sign was given to the City of Springfield by the Association of Route 66 of Missouri for its dominant role at the beginning of Route 66.

  • Notable politicians from Springfield are John Ashcroft, a former US attorney general, and Roy Blunt, “US minority daughter.”
