T-shirt manufacturers use many terms to describe their products. Conditions are not always agreed, and it helps to get a reference guide.
The following is the official Green Man football guide for understanding T-shirt conditions:
20s, 20/1, 20s single: A unit of measure that determines the fineness of a cotton thread. A standard single-layer cotton yarn reel consists of 840 yards of cotton yarn. If 20 spools are required for weighing one pound, the thread on these spools will be called a 20 cm cotton or 20/1. If 30 spools weighs one pound, then the thread on these spools is called a cotton thread 30 s, or 30/1. If 40 spools are required for weighing one pound, then the thread on these spools is called a 40 cm cotton or 40/1. A higher number means a thinner thread, and then a thinner, softer fabric is created. T-shirts from the 30s and 40s are softer, thinner and have better drapery than T-shirts from the 20s. Terms are used in many ways, but this is a number that counts; “20s”, “20/1” and “20 singles” are the same. Threads can curl into thicker threads. If two 20/1 cotton threads were twisted together, it could be called 20/2.
