 What is SmartStrand Carpet? -2

SmartStrand is a revolutionary carpet yarn trademark developed by Du Pont, a company that searched for and created Nylon back in 1935. Made by Mohawk in the USA and common in Europe by the Lano Carpets, there is no unnecessary mystery and confusion around the fabric.

The real yarn itself is called Triexta, Sorona is the trademark it gave to Du Pont, and SmartStrand is the name given by Mohocke and then Lano. All these names can and are often used interchangeably, but none of this explains what a yarn is and what its advantages are.

SmartStrand is actually a Polyester form. Perhaps a lot of mystery and marketing jargon associated with the fabric, is due to the negative perception of some of the polyester. In short, the original polyester yarn (PET) was petroleum-based and had low fault tolerance, was cheap to produce and offer cheap carpets that were easily painted, producing bright colors and a soft pile, but at the expense of durability. Later, a new form of polyester (PTT) was created, which had much better durability, although with a high cost and again did not have green credentials. It was here that DuPont appeared and, after many years of research, created Triexta Sorona, known as SmartStrand. SmartStrand is a PTT yarn that is very durable, made from corn, which has all the advantages of polyester, but has very few disadvantages.

Each carpet material has its strengths and weaknesses.

Wool has excellent anti-shot properties, can hide the soil well, but as soon as a stain can be extremely difficult to clean, it is also the most expensive of all basic carpet materials.

Nylon is also expensive, has a level of absorption, meaning that household urine and other stains and spills can be partially absorbed by the fabric, chemical treatment of stains is required to retain stains, which in combination with the composition of the fabric means that the yarn is not particularly environmentally friendly. It has great strength and durability and tolerates color well, but suffers from UV fading and needs regular cleaning.

Polypropylene is tough and has a decent stain resistance, it can be cleaned using fairly harsh chemicals and is cheap, but it is easily smoothed out and combines with oil-based stains and soil, often leaving a matte feel after use.

Polyester PET is bright, soft, has excellent resistance to stains, but poor durability in terms of "rebound back". The fabric has good resistance to fading and is cheap, but has the same characteristics as the carpet, and is not suitable for high traffic areas.

Finally, PTT (Sorona, Triexta, SmartStrand) has all the advantages of PET, silky, soft, well-painted, has excellent stain resistance and low moisture absorption due to the design of closed cells, and also has durability, excellent rebound (with some guarantees, lasting up to 25 years) and strong protection from the sun, which means that it can be used in any part of the house. The production used and the materials used mean that SmartStrand is a very renewable, environmentally friendly and environmentally friendly material. SmartStrand is more expensive than most other synthetic fabrics, and corresponds to nylon in terms of cost, equating all the positive factors, but eliminating many of the disadvantages of Nylon. It is expected that this will be the carpet yarn of the future.
