I moved to Hong Kong almost seven months ago from a completely different environment in Cincinnati, Ohio. The transition was reliably easy, and I was surprised at how little I experienced culture shock. With that said, HK is very different from most western cities, and much remains to be done. Whatever you think about visiting this great city, considering the possibility of moving or moving here for your work, I thought it would be useful to make a short list of things to see and do in this magnificent city.
- Peak One of the first things I did when I moved to Hong Kong is to look at the city from a height above. Absolutely the best place to see the whole area, visiting The Peak. This is an area that is high above the city and allows you to see most of the northern part of Hong Kong Island, as well as Victoria and Kowloon harbor on the other side of the harbor. The most exciting way to get to the Peak is to take a historical bias, which I’ll tell you about.
- Hong Kong peak tram There are many ways to get to the Peak in HK. You can take a taxi, a bus or even take a walk (but only if you are VERY fit). The most exciting way to get to Peak, however, is to take the famous and historic Peak Tramway. The tram looks like a cable car, but it passes on a VERY steep corner, which gives you the false impression that the surrounding buildings and landscape actually sprout from the ground at a 45-degree angle! The trip lasts from eight to ten minutes, but this is definitely something that you will want to experience at least once.
- Star ferry Recall that in early 1900 in Hong Kong Star Ferry makes a short trip through Victoria Harbor and goes straight to Kowloon, where you will find art and cultural center, Nathan Road and great shops and restaurants. The best part of riding a Star Ferry is that it gives you unobstructed views of HK Island. Only then can you fully appreciate the richness and beauty of one of the greatest cities in the world.
Traveling in Hong Kong is much easier than you think. Most people here speak English and are usually helpful to visitors. The transport system is awesome. Taxis, buses, subways and ferries are easily accessible at most hours of the day and night and are very inexpensive. If you are looking for a trip that is slightly different from the path of battle, but still offers a unique cultural experience and many possibilities, consider a trip to Hong Kong. You will not be disappointed!
