Better in what
The # 1 thing that will damage your food storage is warm. High temperatures will significantly shorten the healthy life of the food you put back. The best place to store food is a climate controlled area with relatively low rates and no light. The basement comes to mind, but most people do not have this luxury. Look for places in your home where temperatures are below 80 degrees and even below 70 degrees, if possible.
Let me take a look at some good places to store supplies in your home:
High view
My beautiful bride is rather short compared to me. Therefore, she cannot reach higher shelves anywhere in the house. We make full use of the 3rd and 4th shelves in our kitchen and storage cabinets to store jars and jars of food. We can store dozens and cans on these higher floors and still leave plenty of space for everyday items that it can reach.
In your closets, see how many rooms you have upstairs. We have seen where you can run another row of racks at the top of the door to store additional items. Here we go for lighter items, such as paper products or packaged foods, such as Macs and cheese in boxes.
Look low
Under the beds - the first logical place to look. Depending on the height of your beds, you should certainly be able to store jars and pints under your beds. Quart banks require a bit more head room, but still possible with some beds. We easily got 30 boxes with pints under our bed. The amount you can get depends on the size and height of your bed.
Look in your closets under your clothes. Your coat rack does not usually touch the floor. There is usually enough space for storing cans / cans on the floor and there is still room for your hanging clothes.
Look under and behind the couch. This is an area with a missed view for storing items.
Look outside your home
This is a place to store items other than food. For us, we used our garage for items that were not damaged by heating. Paper products, water, tents and camping gear. We also store our kitchen and outdoor toilets (buckets) on racks in the garage.
The rack is the key to organizing your garage. Go high with your long-term storage items. We use wire racks that are bolted to studs in the walls of the garage. Each shelf is rated for hundreds of pounds.
You could even go with the repository to save your inventory. Although this is an additional expense, which may not be for everyone, you could use this for your outdoor storage.
Best idea for storing consumables
When we built our house, we added a room the size of a bedroom just for our storage room. We added shelves 4 feet wide, 2 feet deep, and 6 feet high. Each unit has 5 shelves. This gives us a huge capacity with each device.
We can control the amount of light that enters the room, and the temperature never exceeds 76 degrees.
We can stack items on ceilings 9 in this room. This gives us enough food storage space to keep 1 rack for everyday use, and the rest for our long-term storage of food.
This opportunity to store consumables may not be available to everyone. I mention this to give you an idea of what is possible and what you can shoot.
Do what you can with the space that you have. You will be amazed at what you can achieve if you look for the opportunities that you have.
