Passport holders in South Africa need a visa to enter the Schengen zone of Europe. The countries of the Schengen territory are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
If you are visiting only one Schengen country, you must apply for a Schengen visa at this embassy or consulate of that country.
If you are planning to visit several Schengen countries, you must apply for a Schengen visa at the embassy or consult in a country where you will spend more time. For example, if you visited Germany for three days, France and the Netherlands for two days each, you should apply for a Schengen visa at the embassy or consult with Germany.
If you visit several Schengen countries but do not have a main destination, you must apply for a Schengen visa at the embassy or consult the first country you are entering.
A Schengen visa is comparable to a multiple entry visa for all of the above countries, and you only need one Schengen visa. There are several types of Schengen visas: transit visa, short-term visa, long-term visa, airport transit visa and group visa (only under certain circumstances). The total cost of a Schengen visa (of any category) is 160 (R575).
When applying for a visa, you must call the embassy or consulate.
A Schengen visa will be issued to South Africans in a temporary passport if the passenger travels within two months of the issuance of the temporary passport and if this traveler has a South African identity card. Some Schengen countries do not allow entry to a temporary passport. Check before you go.
