Marine News Fall 2004 - Endangered and Endangered in Florida -2

Many marine mammals, fish, turtles, corals and others inhabit our oceans. The delicate balance between man and the ocean is constantly challenged by the demands of our society. Most of our planet is covered with water, an essential ingredient of human life. The state of our oceans must be the highest in our consciousness, so that the quality of life of all species remains as it is.

Florida - Western Indiana Manatea - What kills them? The top manatee story after the recent hurricanes was in Lee County, where residents rescued a manatee, who was the victim of a storm surge hurricane Hurricane Charlie. The stunned and wearyy manatee was taken to Pearl Street after the storm raid had receded. It was one manatee that did not need to be included in the number of deaths this year.

The manats killed this year are divided into categories by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. 1/1/04 - 9/30/04 numbers: Watercraft-60, Flood Gates-1, Other human-4, Perinatal-65, Cold-36, Natural-20, Undetermined-43, Unrecovered-2 for a total of 231.

According to the February number of lanateans in Florida, conducted by the Florida Commission for the Conservation of Wildlife and Wildlife, only 2,568 manatees remain in Florida.

If you see a dead or wounded manatee or one who has been stalked in Florida, call the Florida and Wildlife Service toll-free hotline at 1-888-404-FWCC.

Finally, as a visitor to our tropical paradise, don’t fit, don’t touch, don’t feed or laminate. This is against the law and provides for a fine, as well as a possible term of imprisonment. Use your camera to make memories, not police experiences.

Dolphins are our favorite marine mammal. Currently, dolphins are not under threat, but the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 requires you to stay away from them. Do not encourage them on the path of danger in boats or other human interaction. Wild dolphins were found wounded by fireworks placed on them to hold the blow, beer was poured over them and in their hold on the blow and other horrible stories. These beautiful creatures think that man is their friend, but the next man they meet may be their enemy.

There are licensed objects where you can safely interact with dolphins that have been raised in captivity or rescued.

Sea turtles. Has the 2004 hurricane season damaged their recovery? South Florida is home to loggerheads, leatherbacks and green turtles. Often met khoksbill and Kemp. These are five species found in the waters of the USA in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. The population of traps nesting along the Atlantic coast of Florida, is the second largest in the world. The nesting season lasts from May to September and for about 60 days of nesting, children are also in danger.

Too early to calculate, but annual numbers will reveal losses. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will report for 2004 early next year.

There are other dangers to our sea turtles. In Turtle Hospital in Marathon, Florida, various turtle diseases, such as amputations with flippers caused by fishing line and traps, damage to the wound caused by collisions with the boat, and intestinal lesions caused by the ingestion of foreign materials such as plastic bags, balloons and fishing lines, leave. . Turtles love jellyfish and shrimp, and swallow cigarette and plastic filters. The turtles that died of starvation were found with a stomach full of cigarette filters.
