Most beer taps are made of plastic or glass. But beer styles are made in the old way. They are made of wood.
I like rural initiatives that invest in small businesses to allow shipping companies to clear fallen trees from the local area. Four or five trees on the truck make a very good day, because they are pulled out to the mill, where they are pruned.
It depends on the size of the tap handles, but usually two inches by two inches will just be excellent. So let's just have some fun and do a little math. Let, say, the average tree that falls will have a diameter of three feet. In addition, let me say that they are usually cut into eighteen leg sections. So how many tap handles can you make if these trees are cut two inches by two inches into one section of the legs?
The area of the tree I just described is 1018 inches. If you want to do the math for yourself, the area is equal to the pie times the square. Remember, keep the measurements the same. If it is in inches, stick to inches for a math problem. Thus, an area of 1018 inches means that 254 handles can fit into one part of the tree. With an 18-foot tree, 18 sections would give us 4581 crane-cranes from just one tree. 22 905 crane handles can be made of a truck carrying five trees. Not a bad day.
After they are cut into a mold, they are pushed out to the manufacturer of the crane handles. Again, this is not a standard operating procedure for all manufacturers of beer taps. But many use software called AutoCad, which allows manufacturers to see the handle of a beer tap on a computer with a full layout before it goes to the floor. Some manufacturers even have machines that use AutoCad software to make cuts and slats, like what you can see at Orange County Choppers, where Paul Teutul Sir is today creating some of the most famous choppers.
But, some old school makers will put wooden sections through a series of design cuts, which will first reduce them to size. Then adjust the excess. Pass through the lathe where they will be formed. Then, given a shot of paint and varnished for shine. The final stage is when they place tags on the pens.
A more detailed process will include the actual implementation of the tag in the wood. The same can be done with AutoCad. But, it’s more for the mass production of pens or a more accurate design that turns out perfectly every time. Of course, a team of highly qualified woodworkers can produce very high-quality work.
