There are dozens of products that claim to remove pine stains and smell from carpets and carpeting. But, being the owner of three Pekingese, a breed of dog known for its resistance to the destruction of a home, I had to resort to internal measures in order not to invest in the ocean of commercial pet products.
This simple homemade formula should remove most pet urine stains: two parts of hydrogen peroxide to four parts of water. If the stain remains wet, drink most of the moisture with a paper towel or microfiber cloth.
Pour the hydrogen peroxide mixture into place, let it sit for a few minutes, and then apply it to a microfiber cloth. The stain and smell should disappear. If not, wait a day and repeat the procedure in the same way. (As always, you will want to check your carpet for color in an inconspicuous area. And if you are wondering where to find an inconspicuous area, try under the sofa, chair or coffee table or on this fragment of the carpet in the garage, you will be glad that you held on to this.)
How about fixed spots? I rid the carpets of seemingly permanent stains and odors with very strong or even pure use of hydrogen peroxide. In the case of a terribly stinking cat dyed with a durry wool rug, I used a fine spray to spray a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water over the entire surface of the 75/25 carpet and concentrate on the colored areas.
I repeated the application for several days, leaving the mat to dry outside in the sun between applications. The stain and smell disappeared within three days, and even my dogs could not smell the cat when I bought the carpet inside.
The owner of the chopping wool carpet swore that she tried every means to remove stains from a pet on a summer spot of urine left by her dog, and that nothing would come of the big ugly yellow mark. Working outside again, I just liked the full amount of hydrogen peroxide on the spot and let her sit for a bit before pulling it out. With two applications, the stain has completely disappeared.
Hydrogen peroxide is a useful and reliable stain remover, but before you try any cleaning measures, you should check each carpet for color stability. Variants of the contents of carpet fiber, and you really need to be sure how your carpet will react before you try to eliminate any of these extreme cures.
The best news is that hydrogen peroxide is cheap! You can buy a bottle of about $ 1 in the store at a discount.
